The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) Golden Globe Awards returns in 2023 after a 2022 hiatus and behind-the-scenes overhaul to improve diversity and practices.

Airing in Australia on the Stan streaming service (the first live awards ceremony to broadcast on the local platform), the revamped event’s 80th anniversary, celebrating all things film and television, gave a little more insight into what we can expect from the rest of Awards Season.

Here are the wholesome film wins and shock snubs you may have missed from the 2023 Golden Globe Awards

The Fabelmans writer and director Steven Spielberg wins Best Director and Best Picture - Drama

Praise was heaped on Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical tale The Fabelmans, with the film taking out Best Picture – Drama and the acclaimed filmmaker winning Best Director. Spielberg may seem a shoe-in for the same awards at the Oscars in March, but Martin McDonagh’s black comedy-drama, The Banshees Of Inisherin, and The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once lead the pack when it comes to nominations across the 2023 season.

Speaking of The Banshees Of Inisherin, McDonagh’s story of two friends on a remote Irish island who suddenly and inexplicably fall out, nabbed the Globe for Best Picture – Musical/Comedy against Everything Everywhere All At Once, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Babylon and Triangle Of Sadness.

In the acting categories, Colin Farrell won Best Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy for his nuanced role in The Banshees of Inisherin, while Austin Butler won the same award in the Drama category for his portrayal of music icon Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, accepting his award using a voice many say still sounds eerily like his performance of ‘The King’.

Butler’s win, although no doubt deserved, comes as a surprise when up against celebrated veterans, including Hugh Jackman for his performance in Florian Zeller’s The Son of a father navigating his teen’s mental health; Bill Nighy’s turn as a man making the best of the time he has left in Living; Jeremy Pope as a young man battling discrimination in The Inspection; and Brendan Fraser’s lauded comeback as an obese man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter (Sadie Sink) in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale.

Fraser is the Oscars frontrunner among critics this year, but skipped the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony given his allegation that former HFPA president Philip Berk groped him at a luncheon in 2003. His noted absence makes it perhaps unsurprising that he didn’t get the Best Actor win, but as the Globes are often a precursor to the Oscars it will be interesting to see if that affects his chances in March.

Australia’s own Cate Blanchett took home the statue for Best Actress – Motion Picture – Drama for Tár, Todd Field’s character study of a conductor abusing her position of power. Blanchett will no doubt be up against Best Actress – Motion Picture – Musical Comedy winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) at the Oscars, with the latter a favourite among punters this season.

Ke Huy Quan wins Best Supporting Actor for his role in Everything Everywhere All At Once

In one of the most moving acceptance speeches of the night, Yeoh’s EEAAO co-star Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy, reflecting on his struggles and insecurities in Hollywood, while also thanking Spielberg, for giving him his first shot as a child actor in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and The Daniels for taking a chance on him 30 years later.

Meanwhile, Angela Bassett’s historic win of Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever makes her the first actor to be nominated in an acting category for a Marvel film, putting the icon in good stead for her first ever Oscar nomination in the corresponding category.
