THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS MOVIE REVIEW

Tim: This did not feel like a Matrix film.

Leigh: How so?

Tim: It felt like a tacked-on element of it. Maybe a spin-off. There were so many things that didn't feel like I was watching a complementary film within this story arc, within this trilogy. It didn't feel like the fourth film in The Matrix franchise.

Leigh: Well, it’s a reboot, isn't it? So they are going in a different direction. I'm going to counter what you're saying by talking about the first act, which is really exciting. Lots of big ideas and action setting us up in this world, how they're going to bring Neo and Trinity together, and who the new players are in Jonathan Groff and Neil Patrick Harris. I found that first act really enthralling. Cool set pieces and satirical humour. But I don't think the climax lived up to that set-up.

Tim: I'm almost on the complete opposite end; I was so lost in the first act. I found it really hard to grapple with. It didn't settle with me. I found it quite… ugh, is the word insulting too rough? I felt like they were taking the piss too much. I was like, ‘Hey, I didn't sign up for this.’

I do agree with you, though, Leigh, there were some compelling elements to it. I love the direction they chose to go in. There were really interesting things happening, I completely agree. I just don't think they ultimately got it right.
