BILL AND TED FACE THE MUSIC MOVIE REVIEW
Tim: Can I make a confession? You have been on my case for, you know, almost 18 months since we’ve been doing this podcast that I had never seen the first two Bill And Ted movies until very, very recently.
Leigh: I still can't believe that…
Tim: But I've done it. And now we've seen the third movie in the franchise.
Leigh Livingstone: So Bill And Ted Face The Music revisits Bill and Ted as middle-aged dads, still rocking out and trying to write the song that will fulfil their destiny and save the world. But this time, they're joined on the adventure by their helpful daughters…
Tim: … played by Samara Weaving and Bridgette Lundy-Paine. Which is a nice little addition, complementing the Bill and Ted tone of the movie. It was directed by Dean Parisot, who has also directed Galaxy Quest, which is one of those favourite movies that I watched growing up in the early noughties. And then also Fun With Dick And Jane, which starred Jim Carrey.
Leigh: Very similar in their tones to Bill And Ted...
Tim: If you want to pick one word that encapsulates the work of the director, it’s just: fun. So Bill And Ted Face The Music definitely plays in that space as well.
Leigh: And what's great is that the screenplay was written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon who actually wrote the original film, so that's heartening to know. They know what they're talking about with this franchise.
Tim: They definitely came in with a love of the characters in the story and wanted to give it that authentic flavour.
Leigh: I had such a great time in this film. Can I say that straight off the bat? It was just so fun and heartwarming. I even got a little emotional towards the end.
Tim: It definitely was one of those films that I think is tonally something that we all needed. We needed a fun, silly ride. I think it certainly leaned into the absolute chaotic energy that the first two Bill And Ted movies definitely did. And they didn't turn it down at all for this movie. Ultimately, at times I found it funnier because you've got an adult Alex Winter and an adult Keanu Reeves reprising their iconic roles as Bill and Ted, and they're just these loveable fools. But they also exude so much positive energy and they're just there to try to do the right thing and do right by people – this movie was just dripping in that feeling. It was great.
