THE NORTHMAN MOVIE REVIEW

Leigh: This is Robert Eggers’s biggest film to date, it's worth noting, and it's his most mainstream. Although, it still is distinctly his style. And by that, I mean it's got the fantastical elements, it's got the long holding shots, it’s very visually stunning.

Tim: Yes!

Leigh: A lot of black and white.

Tim: Yeah. And he doesn't shy away from the brutality and the grittiness of things. So many of the rituals we encountered in The Northman, I found quite confronting. I was really fascinated by it. It didn't shy away from much, plus the elaborate customs of the people. It was really, really interesting.

Leigh: Eggers’s signature style is horror, at its most basic element. And he has a unique approach to horror, blending the mythology and history in ways that can be interpreted as either really happening or just a character's state of mind. Those fantastical elements, you think, ‘Oh, is this really magical and mythical, or is it just inside someone's head?’
