MULAN MOVIE REVIEW

Leigh: We saw Mulan this week, and there’s been a bit of controversy around this because Disney decided to release it straight to their streaming service instead of putting it in cinemas. What did you think, Tim?

Tim: Well, Mulan was meant to come out in March of 2020. It’s now September. We’ve been able to watch it on Disney Plus and I don't know about you, but this is a film I grew up with. The original animated musical came out in 1998. It’s been greatly anticipated, and I was very nervous and really happy to watch it. It was epic in scale and scope.

Leigh: We should have got this movie on the big screen!

Tim: You're so right…

Leigh: We should have got it in the cinema. I mean, I think it's worth the money, definitely. But it needs to be seen on a bigger screen. As you said, the scale was epic. The locations alone were amazing…

Tim: Yeah, it's shot between New Zealand and mainland China. Mulan really leant into being shot on location. The mountains and landscape actually play a part in telling the story. It added such powerful, powerful feelings and emotion. The way this film looked visually; Leigh, I was absolutely floored by the sets and costumes.

Leigh: I love that they didn't rely on CGI very much. A lot of it was in camera and special lenses. And just as you said, the locations in New Zealand were epic…
